Airlines 'lost' 1 million bags in 2007

According to the Air Transport Users Council (AUC) report, airlines around the world 'mishandled' 42 million bags in 2007 and completely lost more than a million of them. Still according to the report, the problem was the worst it had been in recent years.

The policies of some airlines are highlighted in the report, clearly showing the red tape passengers have to deal with to try and get compensation for a delayed or lost bag.

Nightshift = bad for you

The latest findings on the impact on night shifts (the duty, not the 1984 album by the Commodores) on people's metabolism, was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It shows a clear link between work-sleep cycles, metabolic disregulation and disease.

People who participated in the test produced less leptin, a hormone that signals a body to stop eating by triggering feelings of satiety. Blood glucose and insulin levels rose, both of which are linked to diabetes. Levels of the stress hormone cortisol also shot up, as did the blood pressure of the test subjects.

Even a brief misalignment caused quite impressive changes, the research shows.

OPS Breakfast

With the introduction of the new ops roster from 01/10 it was clear that it would be very difficult to continue with the provision of breakfast in the same way it was done in the past. Although the roster is still called "Team Based" it has become impossible for the responsible persons in the different teams to figure out when they were supposed to arrange breakfast and who they should approach for that.

So the time had come for the board to decide if we would continue with the provision of the breakfast. We all agreed at the latest meeting to do so, but to change the procedure completely.

Executive Board Meeting November 2008

Our last board meeting was held on 8th November and we discussed the following items:

Results from survey
We received 60 votes, which means only 13% of the membership replied. We discussed the suggestions made for a re-organization of EGATS and hope for more input from the membership. Frederic proposed to organize a forum/meeting between pilots and controllers in order to make EGATS more interesting again. The board decided to collect more ideas, think about the suggestions and discuss them in our future meetings again.

IFATCA Conference Newcommer Ballot

As some of you will remember EGATS used to give the opportunity for a member to join the official EGATS delegation at the IFATCA annual conference. Last year we didn’t organise the ballot, as there were too many practical difficulties, but this year we are bringing it back!

The 48th IFATCA Annual Conference will be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia from 20th to 24th April 2009. Participating in this conference will give you the chance to attend interesting meetings regarding our profession, with professional and technical committees set up to discuss the main issues and the way forward.

International Day of the Air Traffic Controller - 20 OCTOBER 2008

Air traffic control has developed from the humblest beginnings into a highly sophisticated and technology dependent occupation. And even as we are on the cusp of an even more dramatic leap of new technologies, many people remain unaware of just what an air traffic controller does and few comprehend just what is involved in keeping aircraft safely apart, but close enough so that they get to their destinations as efficiently as possible.

Summary of our Board Meeting on 5th August 2008

EGATS Internal
After rechecking every board member’s email address it was decided to put them up on the web page as well. Like this in the future the members could address individual board members or as well use the board@egats.org address to reach the whole board.

Output
The work on our latest output was finished and in the meantime you hopefully enjoy reading it.

New Roster
In the last weeks we were approached by different members who presented us interesting thoughts and ideas about how the new roster could be improved. We presented these ideas to the OMT and the NRPO. They seemed to be very interested and invited the members to further discuss the proposals.

EGATS Membership Survey

At this years' AGM, it was decided to poll the EGATS membership on whether EGATS should continue in its present form or not. For a number of years, interest of the members in EGATS activities seems to have decreased. Final drop was the AGM attendance this year (3 members outside the EB attended!).

If you haven't done so already, please take 2 seconds to fill in this survey and return it to the Executive Board via

or via the EGATS locker
